Title: Anticipation
Characters: An unnamed knight and his mother.
Length: 100
Rating: G
Summary: She hated the agreement, and there was nothing she could do but wait for them to come for her son.
Prompt: Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her and to wonder what was going to happen next. [Alice's Adventures In Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll.]
Author's Notes:
She had plenty of time to grow accustomed to the arrangement. Perhaps that made it worse. So long to anticipate, to dread. So long to fall.
She watched him grow, and it hung like a nightmare over his shoulder, a geas she could not rid him - or herself - of.
The hope that it might, somehow, not come to pass was almost worse.
(What had they ever done to deserve this?)
Because one day he would come running in, bright young eyes fresh with ignorant excitement: "they've come!"
And she would smile bravely - and knowingly hand her son over to monsters.
